Street liquor ban wanted in Riccarton

The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board in Christchurch wants an urgent public liquor ban to combat growing problems with disorder.

Street alcohol bans already exist in the city centre and six other areas.

Board chair Mike Mora says that since the earthquake on 22 February closed the central city's bars, Riccarton's main street has become the defacto night strip.

Mr Mora says drunken students and other young people are fighting, yelling, breaking glass and tipping over rubbish bins throughout the suburb.

The community board meets next week to recommend that Christchurch City Council creates a permanent liquor ban for a large area around the university and main streets.

Police have met the council to propose bans in both Riccarton and Merivale.

National list MP Nicky Wagner says the proposals are a common sense response to the changing city after the quake.
