Civil Defence has released a list of more buildings to be demolished in Christchurch, including 20 heritage buildings.

The list on Wednesday shows 123 buildings need to be demolished or partly demolished following the earthquake on 22 February.

Of the heritage buildings, 20 are set to be demolished, one is to be partly demolished, while five are to be made safe.

The new list adds to one released at the end of March that showed 184 buildings are set to be knocked down or made safe.

Some 100 heritage buildings are now affected.

Civil Defence national controller John Hamilton says most of the buildings are outside the red zone and expects the number to grow by several hundred as more buildings in that area are added.

Mr Hamilton says of the more than 300 buildings, eight are significant or critical - meaning they house important infrastructure, are on important access routes, or pose danger to other buildings.

Mr Hamilton says he understands the frustration of inner-city building owners and residents, but says the decision-making process is complicated.
