Red Cross earthquake grants total $37.9m

The Red Cross has distributed $37.9 million to date through its Emergency and Hardship Grant to Christchurch people affected by the February earthquake.

The money has help 43,600 families and individuals.

Applications for the grant closed on Tuesday and Red Cross staff fielded more than 66,000 calls phones regarding help through the fund.

A new one-off grant of $500 has also been established for those affected by school closures.

The money is designed to cover the extra travel costs involved in going to another school.

It will also apply to children displaced from early childhood education and day care centres.

It is estimated about 7000 children have been affected by school closures.

The schools affected are: Avonside Girls, Linwood College, Catholic Cathedral College, Discovery One, Heaton Normal Intermediate, Marian College, St Mary's School, St Paul's School, Shirley Boys' High Schools and Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti.
