CTV resumes news broadcasts

Canterbury's regional television station begins broadcasting news again on Monday for the first time since the February earthquake.

CTV has been broadcasting emergency information since its main studio building in central Christchurch collapsed after the 6.3-magnitude quake on 22 February, killing 15 staff and dozens of others.

Now dubbed the recovery channel, CTV is relying on its 17 surviving staff to produce a nightly news bulletin and full programming from 2 May.

Journalist Emily Cooper says taking on three people's roles is difficult, but staff feel they are doing it for their lost colleagues.

She they are determined to give Christchurch the best regional news, focused on the recovery, as possible.

Presenter Rob Cope-Williams says staff are coping well and have managed to create a station from scratch in just six weeks, which would normally take months.

New equipment - much of it donated - is arriving daily.

Sales manager Malcolm Harris says almost all advertisers have returned to support the station.

The news will play on Monday at 5.30pm on CTV and replayed on Maori Television.
