Cordon pass given to garden group

A volunteer group that turns sites damaged by the earthquake into temporary parks has been given access to the cordoned area of Christchurch to maintain the city's gardens and develop new ones.

'Greening the Rubble' was set up after the earthquake in Canterbury on 4 September last year. It gives property owners whose premises have been demolished, the chance to transform their site into a public park until it's redeveloped.

Two sites are being worked on within the cordon, as well as several outside it.

Volunteer Rhys Taylor says it is important that Christchurch remains the garden city.

He says it is safe to work inside the cordon because they do not need access to buildings.

The work is funded by sponsors and charity groups.
