A Christchurch tourism organisation hopes a $1.5 million funding boost will help to bring the local industry out of its biggest-ever slump.

The Christchurch International Airport and Canterbury Tourism have joined forces to implement the new project, which it says will help rebuild the city's image and market the area overseas.

Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief executive Tim Hunter says tourism operators report a 70% drop in business, while the airport is reporting 20% fewer people flying to the city.

Mr Hunter says the project will encourage visitors back to Christchurch by showing what attractions are still operating and assuring people that it is a safe destination.
