Elderly quake evacuees to be moved again

Sick and elderly people evacuated from Christchurch to Nelson after the February earthquake are being moved for a second time following the sudden closure of a rest home in Nelson.

The Omaio Rest Home, which had been mothballed for two years, re-opened in February to house Christchurch people.

However, owners the Oceania Group say the number of residents moving to the home is not been enough to make the home economic.

The Service and Food Workers Union says 23 people will lose their jobs.

The union says its members are concerned for the 10 hospital bed patients transferred from Christchurch and seven aged care people who have to be moved again.
