Parking fines being collected for first time since quake

The Christchurch City Council has begun collecting parking fines for the first time since the February earthquake.

Parking enforcement staff are now operating in a limited capacity in some of the areas where traffic has increased, including areas around schools and suburban malls.

Council spokesperson, Anne Columbus, says tickets will be issued only for serious parking offences.

She says the council is aware that payment may be difficult for some people, particularly those who are in financial hardship, and staff will consider the circumstances of people who contact them.

Ms Columbus says reminder notices will be posted out after Easter to people who received an infringement notice prior to 22 February.
