State of national emergency in Christchurch lifted

Civil Defence Minister John Carter says he's expecting a seamless transition from Civil Defence control to the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA).

The authority took over just before midnight on Saturday when the state of national emergency was lifted, almost 10 weeks after the February earthquake.

Mr Carter says civil defence personnel including national controllers John Hamilton and Steve Brazier have been seconded to CERA, and while the focus might change, many staff will remain the same.

Mr Carter says he is grateful to all civil defence staff in Christchurch who he says have done a wonderful job responding to the earthquake.
