Help for Christchurch gardeners

Christchurch gardeners who were forced to leave their homes because of the February earthquake are being invited to move their plants to a community garden until they can return home.

A volunteer scheme called Project Plant has been set up by Canterbury-based National party MPs and will provide a community garden for people whose favourite plants would otherwise have been left untended.

Project's co-ordinator Catherine Lister says the land has been donated by a local man and can hold about 3,000 plants, with room to expand if necessary.

Those who want to use the garden can transplant their own plants or have them moved by volunteers in the middle of May.
