Prisoners to be trained to work in Christchurch

Expected trade skill shortages for the rebuilding of Christchurch could be filled by inmates at Paparua men's prison under a new government programme.

Over the next 12 months, 130 to 160 new training placements in specific trades will be provided for prisoners serving short-term sentences.

Existing carpentry and joinery skills training for house building and refurbishment will be expanded.

Three new training workshops will also be established for courses in painting, plastering, plumbing, drain laying and gas welding and should be in operation by late October.
