Residents of earthquake affected eastern suburbs of Christchurch are closer to having a stable power supply as repair work on underground cables nears completion.

Electricity network operator Orion says work on high voltage cables aimed at providing more reliable power supply should be finished by the end of the May.

Orion says about 90% of the cables in the eastern suburbs have been repaired so far and things should be back to normal by the end of July.

It says progress is also being made on a new substation in the area, as well as a 1.5 kilometre-long overhead line that will be put up in the next two weeks.
