A survey of the construction sector shows many are expecting more work and higher prices in the next year because of the February earthquake in Christchurch.

The survey found 50% of respondents in Christchurch expect material and construction costs to rise during the next 12 months by between 8% - 10%.

Global construction company Davis Langdon conducted the survey.

Research head Michael Skelton, says the higher prices will be felt across the country as materials and labour go to Christchurch for the rebuild.

The survey also found the number of respondents concerned about a skills shortage rose from 48% in December last year to 60%.
