A Christchurch man has been jailed for the theft of emergency generators following February's devastating earthquake.

Owen Anthony Jackson, 23, appeared in the Rangiora District Court on Wednesday.

Jackson was found guilty of stealing three generators worth about $6000 the day after the 22 February quake.

Judge Stephen Erber jailed Jackson for three years and three months.

Police set up special teams to patrol hard-hit areas in an effort to stamp out potential looters following quakes in Canterbury on 4 September last year and in February.

At the time, police warned that they and the courts would clamp down on any theft or looting.
