Christchurch City Council has confirmed the first of the redundancies for employees whose work premises were seriously damaged by the February earthquake.

Twelve preschool personnel are losing their jobs.

The council has told 172 employees that their roles will no longer exist and has had talks with them to see if other positions within the council are suitable for them. Their fates are expected to be known by the end of the month.

Community services manager Michael Aitken says unfortunately they were unable to find alternative roles for the preschool people, who worked at the QEII Park Preschool. They have been made redundant.

The premises were badly damaged in the magnitude 6.3 earthquake on 22 February and are permanently closed.
