More than 10,000 Christchurch people have taken part in an expo allowing them to share their thoughts on how they think central city should be rebuilt.

The Share An Idea expo, run by the Christchurch City Council invited people to discuss their ideas with others, write them down, submit them online, or record voice messages.

Eighteen guest speakers, with expertise in areas from transport to seismology were also given time to share their thoughts and answered questions from the public.

Christchurch's Mayor, Bob Parker, says the aim of the expo is to better understand the community's vision and to inform people about how the central city plan will be developed.

The Christchurch City Council says the thousands of submitted ideas will be sorted into key groups and given back to the public for further consultation over the coming weeks.
