A telethon to raise money for post-quake Christchurch has brought in more than $2.5 million.

Rise Up Christchurch was broadcast by Maori Television for 12 hours from 9am on Sunday and raised $2,561,015.

Events were held in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Sydney, Los Angeles and London.

An internet auction saw items attracting thousands of bids, while guests at a Christchurch dinner held at SkyCity made bids in a silent auction for a range of items including a guitar signed by the Foo Fighters, which went for $15,000.

Substantial donations also came from many corporates including Mainfreight, McDonald's, and Rise Up sponsor Fonterra.

In addition to gifting $500,000 to cover the telethon's production costs, Fonterra donated a further sum of $1 million in the closing moments of Sunday night's broadcast.

It is three months since the magnitude 6.3 earthquake on 22 February.
