Deadline for EQC Christchurch quake claims

6:18 pm on 23 May 2011

Claims arising from property damage because of the Christchurch earthquake in February must be lodged with the Earthquake Commisison (EQC) by midnight on Monday.

EQC chief executive Ian Simpson says it is legally bound not to accept any claims after the deadline.

He is urging anyone, even if they have not been able to tell how damaged their property is, to lodge a claim; the details can be worked through later.

The commission has paid out $866 million since the first earthquake that struck Canterbury on 4 September last year.

Of that, just $17 million so far is for the devastating quake on 22 February. The commission expects that figure to increase in the next couple of weeks and eventually match the cost of the September quake.

EQC has received 339,000 claims from those in Canterbury whose homes were damaged by earthquakes. Of that, 154,000 are from the February quake.
