New Christchurch sports centre to provide jobs

The Christchurch City Council is hoping a new sports centre will provide jobs for staff facing redundancy.

In April, 172 people were told their roles no longer existed after the February earthquake damaged facilities.

So far, 12 pre-school staff have been made redundant.

But more than 150 others employed at the badly-damaged QEII Park and the Centennial Recreation and Sport Centre are still in limbo.

The council says the new Gordon Condon Sports Centre will provide some new positions and it is also looking to employ more staff at two other sports facilities.

The council says it should be clear how many people will be made redundant by the end of this week.
