Details have been revealed of a new temporary shopping area in part of the red zone in Christchurch.

Demolition of buildings in Cashel Mall damaged by the earthquake begins this week. Property owners are planning to put up a variety of temporary structures in their place so the area can reopen quickly.

One owner, who has several buildings in the mall, intends to use a large, insulated greenhouse which will fit about 40 shops inside it.

Other owners plan to put up expo-style tents, similar to those used for the Ellerslie flower show, shipping containers with glass sides, or portable buildings.

The new precinct will be open in time for Cup and Show Week in November.
