2:26 pm on 4 June 2011

A show home in the first temporary village for people displaced in the earthquakes will be open in Kaiapoi this weekend.

The Department of Building and Housing is constructing a village of 25 portable homes in Kaiapoi domain, primarily for people whose homes were damaged in the September earthquake.

Deputy chief executive Maria Robertson says there is already a lot of interest in them.

She says about 700 - 800 houses in Kaiapoi were badly damaged.

The department expects that about 200 families will require accommodation at any one time, while their house is repaired or rebuilt.

The show home will be open to the public from 11am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday.
