Christchurch rates based on 2007 housing values

Council rates in the Christchurch city area will continue to be calculated using 2007 house valuations for up to two more years due to disruptions caused by the recent earthquakes.

New valuations were being worked on when the initial earthquake hit in September 2010.

A report to the Christchurch City Council says the unsettled property market, uncertainty about damage to land and the repairs needed on many homes are barriers to completing a revaluation at the moment.

Christchurch mayor Bob Parker says continuing to use the 2007 valuations is the fairest system at the moment, and means that everyone is at least on an even playing field.
