Christchurch councillors have approved the construction of an interment site for victims of the February earthquake who have not yet been found.

There is still no sign of four of the 181 people who are known to have died in the quake, although searchers have found some human remains that cannot be identified.

At its meeting on Thursday, Christchurch City Council approved an interment site at the Avonhead Park Cemetery.

Council public affairs general manager Lydia Aydon says it consulted closely with the families of the missing victims about the proposal.

She says the family members wanted somewhere quiet, away from tourists, and near the airport for easy access by the families of overseas victims.

Ms Aydon says the council is also planning a public memorial to the commemorate the tragedy.
