'BYO pub' starts up in Heathcote

The church hall in the earthquake-damaged community of Heathcote has been transformed into a local pub.

Many buildings in the area, including the historic tavern, library and shops, were damaged in the September and February quakes.

That prompted local people to utilise one of the few amenities left standing.

The vicar at the Heathcote-Mt Pleasant Anglican church, Mary Giles, says the BYO pub has been fantastic for the community.

She says although it might seem strange to have a pub in a church, she believes it is important for people to have somewhere to socialise and support each other.
