The Westfield Mall in the Christchurch suburb of Riccarton has been evacuated and is likely to stay closed on Monday following more earthquakes in the region.

A series of tremors have been felt since 7.37am, including ones measuring 6 and 5.5.

Hundreds of shoppers and staff at the mall could be seen evacuating the building and gathering in groups in the front carpark after the 5.5 quake at 1pm.

As the magnitude 6 quake struck at 2.20pm, there were crashing sounds as produce fell from shelves inside the building.

People waiting near the edge of the mall struggled against the motion of the quake to run or stumble further away from the building.
