Basic services information for quake residents

6:22 pm on 20 June 2011

Almost all Christchurch residents have their water back on, after last week's two big aftershocks cut supply to thousands of people. The boil water notice has also been lifted for tap water.

Christchurch City Council says some small areas at the top of Scarborough are still without water.

Below is information about essential services. More details can be found on the Christchurch City Council website.

Public health

The boil water notice was lifted for tap water on Monday.

Canterbury medical officer of health, Dr Ramon Pink, says it is now safe to drink tap wate, but water from tankers and distribution points still needs to be boiled.

Take precautions when clearing silt and when coming into contact with broken sewer pipes. Wear gumboots and rubber gloves.

If people do get ill, they should contact their GP or a pharmacist.

Federated Farmers is calling for more volunteers to help shovel silt from residents' properties in the eastern suburbs this week.

It says the Farmy Army and the Student Volunteer Army operation need at least 200 people a day to help remove the silt.

People are asked to bring a shovel or a wheelbarrow to the A & P Showgrounds in Curletts Road. Volunteers are needed between 7am and 4pm.

Accommodation

People needing emergency accommodation should contact the Canterbury Earthquake Temporary Accommodation Service on 0800 67 32 27.

Schools

All schools were expected to open on Monday.

Power

Orion says last week's aftershocks have not significantly delayed efforts to repair the cables damaged in February, which should be mended by late July.

Nearly 1000 homes in Avonside and Bexley have been relying on three diesel generators to supply power since last week's quakes.

Orion continues to respond to the few remaining requests for power restoration after last Monday's events cut power to about 56,000 customers.

Water

Almost all Christchurch residents have their water back on, after last week's two big aftershocks cut supply to thousands of people. The boil water notice has also been lifted for tap water.

Christchurch City Council says some small areas at the top of Scarborough are still without water, and work was continuing on Monday to restore the supply there.
