Quiet night for police

Police in Christchurch say it was a quiet night.

Police and army personnel spent the night carrying out special patrols in the eastern suburbs, in case the rivers flooded at high tide.

District Commander Dave Cliff says cordoned-off areas of the city are being monitored to ensure no one goes in.

Superintendent Cliff says about 80 calls were received after the two aftershocks on Monday afternoon, but the number of calls has dropped considerably.

Police are still urging people to keep off the roads unless necessary, to allow emergency services to do their jobs.
