The Lyttelton Business Association says the remains of the Timeball Station were completely destroyed, in Monday's significant earthquakes.

The Category 1 listed building was severely damaged in February and was in the process of being brought down, stone by stone. It was built 135 years ago.

Association chair Andrew Turner told Morning Report that Monday's quakes brought the remains of Timeball Station to the ground.

All that was left of the Timeball Station was a cloud of dust, he said.

Mr Turner said two churches on Winchester Street, including the Holy Trinity church, have also collapsed.
