Christchurch people who have properties with liquefaction are asked to scoop the silt into piles and leave them on the roadside.
Christchurch City Council says contractors will collect the silt and take it to the Burwood landfill which has reopened.
At least 20 roads are closed or restricted because of damage and motorists have been asked to take care driving.
Gayhurst bridge and the old Waimakariri bridge remain closed.
