About 16,500 properties in Christchurch are still without water and it could be up to a week before full services are restored to everyone following significant tremors on Monday.

Fewer than 100 customers were without power by Thursday, but lines company Orion warns the network remains fragile.

The Christchurch City Council has brought in more workers to try and resolve the water situation. They are having particular problems in the suburbs of Avonside, Dallington and Bexley.

Water has been restored to Lyttelton and the lower slopes of Mount Pleasant.

The boil water notice for the entire city is still in place on Thursday and people are urged to keep using chemical and portable toilets.

Some 59 schools were closed, although 37 will reopen on Friday and all should be open by Monday.

More than 60 roads are still closed or partly closed, with one police officer describing the situation on the roads as dodgy at best.

Motorists are advised to take extreme caution.
