The earthquakes in the Canterbury region have deterred international and domestic visitors travelling to the South Island.

Statistics New Zealand says guest nights dropped 3.7% nationwide in April, with a slump in those visiting the South Island offseting a rise in the North Island

Canterbury accounted for the bulk of the fall - with 28% fewer people staying in the region's hotels, motel's, backpackers, and other commercial accommodation.

International visitors made up two-thirds of the fall in Canterbury, dropping 41%.
