The Earthquake Commission is expecting a report on the stability of the Port Hills by the end of next week.
The constant aftershocks are increasing the rockfall danger in many of the city's hillside suburbs and delaying repair work.
Other than emergency repairs to make hillside homes safe or weather-proof, work to fix or replace houses in these suburbs is on hold until investigations into the stability of the land is complete.
There was much rockfall in parts of Christchurch's hill suburbs - from Avoca Valley to Sumner - during the February earthquake, and that worsened in severe aftershocks earlier in June.
The Earthquake Commission says Tonkin and Taylor's geotechnical engineers have assessed 70% of the Port Hills and are expected to report back within 10 days.
The commission says until it has that information, no new repair work will begin, but repairs already started will continue.
