The largest roading project ever undertaken in Christchurch is on track despite setbacks due to the earthquakes in the city.
The $140 million Southern Motorway will connect the central city with Lyttelton Port and the south-western suburbs.
Transport Agency Canterbury state highways manager Colin Knaggs says work stopped for three weeks after the 22 February earthquake while staff helped with emergency road repairs.
Mr Knaggs says large sections of the new motorway slumped during the quake, meaning the design had to be adjusted, and the site needs constant re-surveying.
But he says the project is on track to be finished in early 2013 as originally planned.
