Crematorium not welcome by some in Sydenham

A group of Christchurch business owners fear a crematorium being built in the suburb of Sydenham will drive people away from the area.

The regional and city councils say the crematorium was approved at the end of last year.

The chair of the Sydenham Business and Community Association believes it may drive people away from living or starting a business in a suburb trying to revitalise itself after significant earthquake damage.

Rob Gould says his association, along with local MPs and independent experts, is considering an appeal against the consents.

The city council says it is too late to stop this particular project, but local opposition could spark changes restricting future crematoriums in the central city area.
