Christchurch housing market picks up

The Real Estate Institute says Christchurch houses are selling fast, spending an average of 35 days on the market last month - a week less than in June 2010.

The Institute's Canterbury spokesperson, Tony McPherson, says more people have been looking for new homes since the Government's decision to offer to buy properties in earthquake-damaged areas.

He says this had led to a shortage of properties in the least damaged suburbs.

Last month, 87 properties were sold in eastern, central and hill suburbs of Christchurch where quake damage was most severe, compared to 175 in the largely undamaged northern and western areas of the city.
