A trust fund set up to help earthquake-stricken Canterbury businesses has now handed out more than $1 million.

The Canterbury Business Recovery Trust has received more than 400 applications for assistance.

Businesses from throughout the world have donated about $5 million to the trust since February's catastrophic earthquake.

Executive director Louise Edwards says the donations have been so far used to help struggling companies relocate, advertise their business and replace damaged equipment.

Ms Edwards says the trust has approved about 80 grants or loans to date.
