Building industry picking up in Canterbury

New figure show the construction industry is picking up in Canterbury.

The Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation said on Thursday the number of people being trained has increased steadily since January, which suggests employers are taking on more staff and apprentices.

Area manager Richard Willis says following an all-time low in the last two years, Canterbury's earthquake rebuilding is providing more job opportunities.

Mr Willis says although training numbers are rising across the country, Christchurch is showing a much higher increase than any other region.

He says there have been more than 300 people sign up for training this year; half of them in the last two months.

Mr Willis says nearly all of the apprenticeships are young adults living in Canterbury.
