Demolition of another quake-damaged high rise building is due to begin in Christchurch next week.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority announced this morning that a contract has been signed off to take down the 11-storey hotel on Durham Street.

Demolitions manager Warwick Isaac, says it was agreed the best method to take it down would be to demolish it bit by bit, from the top down, rather than using explosives.

Mr Isaacs says it should take less than three months to demolish the hotel.

The demolition is expected to free up a large area around the Copthorne, known as the drop zone, which has been cordoned-off for safety reasons since the February quake.
