Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says he is encouraged by the way Christchurch was able to cope with freezing weather this week.

Snow fell to sea level in Christchurch in some of the coldest weather for years.

Stormwater systems coped after the thaw from the big fall of snow.

Mr Brownlee was speaking at his weekly summary of developments in Canterbury's recovery from earthquakes.
