$4 million cardboard cathedral seen as worth it

The Dean of ChristChurch Cathedral says building a $4 million cardboard cathedral in the city would be money well spent.

A recyclable structure, designed by a Japanese architect, would be used as a multi-purpose community building until a permanent replacement for the earthquake-damaged cathedral is finished.

Peter Beck told Morning Report the cardboard cathedral would give the church a presence back in the city and would be a sign of hope and confidence in the future.

Dean Beck said a location for the cardboard cathedral is yet to be confirmed, but he believes there is plenty of unused land available.

The plan is only in its initial stages.
