Fate of AMI Stadium still up in air

The fate of Christchurch's earthquake damaged AMI Stadium will not be known for months, but it has been confirmed that the Crusaders rugby team will not play any matches there in 2012.

The Christchurch City Council on Tuesday released its first update on the extent of damage to key buildings the Town Hall, the Convention Centre and the stadium arising from the 22 February quake.

The council says the Hadlee Stand at AMI Stadium will need to be demolished and the other three stands need further assessment.

The Canterbury Rugby Football Union says it is determined to play in Christchurch next year and is looking at several other sites.

The Town Hall also needs further assessment, but the council says it has suffered land movement, with part of the building now detached from the rest.

Engineers are recommending that the Convention Centre be demolished and the council is now awaiting agreement from its insurers.
