The Cabinet will meet in Christchurch on 5 September to mark the anniversary of the first Canterbury earthquake.

Prime Minister John Key says the last time the Cabinet met outside Wellington was 1995 when it gathered in Paihia during Waitangi Day celebrations to commemorate the 155th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty.

Mr Key says the Cabinet will be briefed by the Mayors of Christchurch, Waimakariri and Selwyn.

The first earthquake occurred at 4.51am on Saturday, 4 November.
