The Spanish-born tenor will perform at the CBS Canterbury Arena on 6 October to raise funds for rebuilding the Court Theatre and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
The Court Theatre is struggling to find new premises and resume theatre after losing its building in the quake.
Southern Opera Trust chair Christopher Doig says Domingo is one of the greatest singers in the history of opera and has postponed another commitment in order to come to New Zealand.
He says Domingo has his own understanding of earthquakes after losing four family members in an earthquake in Mexico in 1985.
