Major Christchurch hotel condemned

A major hotel in Christchurch, damaged in the earthquakes, will be demolished and will not be rebuilt.

The owner of the The Crowne Plaza Hotel says the building has been on a significant lean since the February earthquake and an assessment has confirmed it will need to be brought down.

Eureka Funds Management says the new building standards for earthquake strengthening in Christchurch mean it would be too expensive to rebuild or repair the 12-storey hotel.

The company says its priority at the moment is finding places for the Crowne Plaza's 160 workers at other hotels it owns around the country.
