Lights to beam from Cathedral Square

12:13 pm on 27 August 2011

Beams of will shine from Christchurch's Cathedral Square, one year on from the 4 September earthquake.

On the anniversary of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Canterbury, two lights will be turned on from the square.

Organiser Janine Morrell-Gunn, of Whitebait-TV, says the cordoned-off centre of Christchurch looks like a black hole at present and the lights will symbolise that the city does still shine and the future is bright.

Mrs Morrell-Gunn says the lights will go on at 6.59pm on 4 September and organisers would like people to show their solidarity with Christchurch by shining torches into the night sky at that time.

The lights will be on from sunset to sunrise until 23 February.
