200 red zone residents protest at home offers

Organisers of a rally protesting the offers to Christchurch red zone residents say they are not after a handout - they just want to be treated fairly.

About 200 people attended the rally on Sunday in the suburb of Avonside, where many homes have to be abandoned due to earthquake damage.

The badly twisted Medway Street bridge in Avonside was draped with banners saying the red zone offers will leave people in debt and despair.

Organiser Mike Coleman says the residents from Brooklands, Bexley, Dallington and Avonside are frustrated with the offers from the Government and insurers for red zoned home owners.

He says one of the major issues is insurers not honouring the full replacement policies that people have spent years paying for.

Reverend Coleman says it's also clear some rateable values are unfair and should be reviewed.
