Teacher cuts in Christchurch

The Government is axing the equivalent of 167 teaching jobs in Christchurch next year due to enrolment drops that followed the February earthquake.

Schools knew the cuts were coming, but the full picture emerged only on Friday after the Ministry of Education sent schools their staffing entitlements for 2012.

Education Minister Anne Tolley says 1500 children have moved schools within Christchurch and a further 3500 have moved to schools in other centres.

She says the net result is a reduction of 167 in Christchurch schools' staffing entitlements.

Mrs Tolley says that does not mean 167 jobs will go, because many schools will lose only part of an entitlement and might choose to make up for this out of their operational budgets.

The President of the Canterbury Primary Principals Association, John Bangma, says as well as the loss of teaching jobs, there will be cuts in operations budgets which will affect teacher aides, office staff and cleaners.
