Parties sign deal over quake infrastructure repairs

Permanent repairs to earthquake damaged infrastructure in Christchurch are to be carried out by an alliance of contractors, the Government and the Christchurch City Council.

The parties signed a contract on Thursday to repair water pipes, sewerage and roads over five years at an estimated cost of $2 billion.

The scale of the project is not yet known, because while work to establish this began after the first big quake in September last year, it has had to be carried out afresh following this year's quakes in February and June.

As long as the number of aftershocks continue to reduce, authorities say they should have a better idea of the work required within six to eight months.
