Cemeteries decimated by quakes

The Historic Cemeteries Conservation Trust says cemeteries across Christchurch have been decimated by the earthquakes of the past year.

The trust hopes Christchurch City Council will help pay for repairs to the gravestones.

It says in some cases there are no descendants left to do repair work which would normally be the responsibility of families, so those graves belong to the community.

The council says the cemeteries have been added to a master list of assets that need repair, but it is too soon to say what steps it will take.
