Canterbury University Vice-Chancellor Rod Carr says the university has a funding shortfall of $12 - $18 million as a result of the earthquakes.
Student numbers are down by about 1500, with about a quarter of first-year students and 8% of others not resuming studies after the earthquakes, he says.
Dr Carr told Nine to Noon the university will not know insurance costs or confirmed student numbers until next year, however it was clear the university will not be able to cover its expenses from its operating revenue in 2012.
The Vice-Chancellor said the university was not yet proposing job cuts but was actively advertising that it's on sound ground and still a strong academic institution.
